Thoraualm (elev. 1210m) / Thoraukopf (elev. 1481m)

The Hochfelln projects four striking ridgelines into the Ruhpolding Valley, nestled between which are areas of high pastures that serve as popular hiking destinations.

Between the Nesselauerschneid (to the south) and Thorauschneid (north) lies the biggest area of alpine pastures in the Thorau region, with one of the numerous hill farms also offering simple refreshments. On the western end of the high pastures, the Thoraukopf towers skywards, a rewarding destination in itself, not least because of the views of the wild and scarred Weissgrabenkopf, as well as the cute marmots that make their home there.

Data:

Valley Town: Ruhpolding (elev. 690 m)
Starting Point: Car park at the Glockenschmiede on the road to Brand, close to the Fairy-Tale Park, about 3 km from the town centre.
Trail Times: Glockenschmiede – Thoraualm ca. 1 1/2 – 2 hrs.
Thoraualm – Thoraukopf 1/2 hr.
Thoraukopf – Thoraualm 1/2 hr.
Thoraualm – Glockenschmiede a good hour

Route Description:

3/5 hr. walk, 500/800 vertical metres, easy

From the Glockenschmiede (museum) uphill along the forestry road through the ravine as far as a trail branch-off. Here you will commence a left-to-right loop up to the exposed Thoraualmen (can also be reached by mountain bike). To reach the Thoraukopf, take the steeply ascending westerly trail up to the gap and then on to the (not particularly prominent) summit.

Return via the same route. (From the Thoraukopf, a descent via the Hochfellnalm and Farnbödenalm would also be possible and is not significantly longer.)
