Sonntagshorn (elev. 1961m)

The Sonntagshorn gets its name from its tamer southern approaches, with the local farmers of Unken naming the final approach to the summit the “Sunndach” or “Sun Roof”.

During the ascent, hikers have to overcome a Level-II climb amongst loose rock, an alpine undertaking in every sense of the word.

Data:

Valley Town: Ruhpolding (elev. 690 m)
Starting Point: Laubau, Woodcutters Museum.
Trail Times: Ascent 3 1/2 hrs,
Descent 3 hrs.

Route Description:

7 hr. walk, 1300 vertical metres, difficult

To the Schwarzachenalm (best reached by mountain bike, leaving your bike there). In the Kraxenbach Valley, branch off into the middle canyon (whatever happens, do not head into the first canyon!), ascending via its right (western) side. Over the stream to the (hidden) service hut and into the debris-strewn cirque.

Continue up to the foot of the ca. 60 m-high rocky stage beneath the alpine gap; at this point, your best bet is to make a crossing to the left, heading up through the gully (Level II, loose terrain). Now on via a partially exposed ridgeline (Levels I-II, never cross over to the northern side!) all the way to the summit.

Descent:

From the summit, head eastwards down the ridgeline (Level I) into the gap of the Upper Kraxenbach. Make your way in a northerly direction down the major scree field, crossing the stream several times, then keeping to the right as far as the Kraxenbachklause. Keep right as you make your way downhill (occasional short uphills along the way), to the confluence of both Kraxenbach streams and the Schwarzachenalm, finally exiting towards Laubau.

Sonntagshorn and the Reifelberge, a serious mountaineering endeavour!
