Hochfelln (elev. 1671m)
There are still some climbers, or so we hear, who shun the Hochfelln
simply because a cable lift runs to its top. Clearly, they don’t know the
old ascent via the south face.
It is hard to imagine the views from the
Hochfelln being any broader or more fascinating. And sitting out on the
terraces there, couldn’t possibly be more wonderful! Numerous routes are
possible for the descent, including the way you originally came up.
Valley Town:
Ruhpolding (elev. 690 m).
Starting Point:
Egg, just above Maiergschwendt (elev.
700 m), about 1.5 km west of the town centre; it is best to leave your car at
the Maiergschwendt car park and not at the Egg-Bauern farm.
Trail Times:
Ascent 3 hrs.
Descent 2 – 2 1/2 hrs.
Route Description:
5 1/2 hr. walk, 970 vertical metres,
easy
Via Blicken and Hinterreit to Egg (clearly sign-posted); there, uphill across the meadow to the east; a steep path leads through the forest to an alpine saddle. You will cross a sparse forest until you find yourself above the Farisböden (high pastures, cutover land), keeping right you’ll negotiate a short steep stretch and then climb steadily to the Fellnalm. Now keep to the left as you continue to the south face, ascending across to the path which comes up from Bergen shortly before the summit house.
Descent:
Your best option is to follow the same route
you took up, or to make your way from the summit to the east and the
Thoraualmen, then drop to the Glockenschmiede, continuing via Hasslberg to
Maiergschwendt.
Northerly descent to the Bründlingalm, eastwards to the Steinbergeralm, through Bacherwinkl and on to Maiergschwendt.
Summit station high above Bergen with panoramic views of the Chiemgau
mountains. Good to know: The staff at the Hochfellnhaus are used to dealing with
large numbers of visitors and their cooks serve up some especially tasty
dishes.
