Biathlon Olympic Training Camp

It was 1964. In that year, the Ruhpolding Ski Club applied to establish a ski training centre in the area. Over the years, the town developed into a focal point of the international biathlon scene.

In April 1972, the village and the ski club submitted a joint application to the Bavarian and German Ski Associations for a “National Biathlon Training Centre”.  One year later, Ruhpolding – specifically, the area next to the Zirmberg ski-jump hills - was selected as the location for a “State Biathlon Training Centre”. 1977 saw construction of the first cross-country trails begin.

With regard to the World Biathlon Championships, which Ruhpolding was first asked to host in 1979, the hitherto provisional shooting range was expanded to a total of 30 separate lanes.

As the following years showed, the Biathlon Training Centre became an ever more valuable part of the German national team’s preparations. Appearances by German biathletes on the medal stands at the Olympics and the World Championships almost became “standard”.  With this facility and the biathlon World Cup events it has hosted annually since 1980, Ruhpolding has earned itself an excellent international reputation.

In preparation for the upcoming World Biathlon Championships of 1985 - which would prove to be such a great success, that the organisers did not even have to avail themselves of an approved federal subsidy for the event - a broad range of expansion and remodelling measures were undertaken.  The shooting ranges were modernised, as were three bridges and the spectator stands.

In 1990, Herbert Fritzenwenger became Director of the National Training Centre.  And in 1993, Ruhpolding was able to stage the Junior World Biathlon Championships.
In 1996, this Bavarian biathlon mecca was given the nod to host the World Championships again for the third time.

In the years that followed, further construction work was conducted.  The ski-roller track had floodlighting installed, while the routes taken by the trails were improved and the trails themselves broadened.

In the previous year, the range was improved to feature 30 state-of-the-art shooting lanes.  This year, an additional spectator terrace has already proven its worth, increasing the spectator capacity in the stadium alone to 7500.
